What to Do If the Firmware Update Fails

Even with the correct file, failures happen. Here is the recovery checklist.

Symptom A: "Update File Not Found"

  • Cause: Wrong folder structure or USB format.
  • Fix: Re-format USB to FAT32. Ensure the ZK folder is in the root (not inside another folder).

Symptom B: Device Stuck on "Booting..." or White Screen zkteco firmware update download

  • Cause: Incomplete flash or wrong model firmware.
  • Fix: This is "bricked." You need a boot recovery SD card (only available from ZKTeco technical support). You cannot fix this via USB. Contact your distributor for a recovery image.

Symptom C: Fingerprint Sensor No Longer Works After Update What to Do If the Firmware Update Fails

  • Cause: The new firmware contains a driver for a different sensor module (Optical vs. Capacitive).
  • Fix: Downgrade to the previous firmware. Keep a copy of your old version before updating. If downgrade fails, you need to recalibrate the sensor via the hidden engineering menu (press Menu + 9 + Enter simultaneously on some models).
