Wals Noellen Sets 1 | 5

This is a full guide to WALS Nöllen Sets 1–5 — a series of exercises used in vocal pedagogy, particularly in German Gesangspädagogik (singing education), based on the method developed by Margret Nöllen (1914–1994). These sets are designed to build vocal technique systematically through functional exercises rather than just repertoire singing.

Set 4 – Agility & Flexibility

Goal: Fast runs, trills, and staccato without tension. WALS Noellen Sets 1 5

Set 3: Long-Range Low-Frequency (LF) Configuration

While Sets 1 and 2 focus on high speed, Set 3 is optimized for dirty environments over extreme distances. This set changes the carrier frequency of the inductive loop. This is a full guide to WALS Nöllen

  • Functionality: Set 3 lowers the operating frequency to penetrate heavy ferrite contamination (iron dust, metal shavings).
  • Trade-off: You lose some maximum speed (down to 90 m/min) but gain signal stability at distances up to 400 meters without a repeater.
  • Application: Steel slab yards, foundries, and port container spreaders.

Exercises:

  1. Slow 3-note ascending & descending (do–re–mi–re–do) on [oː] – keep breath flowing.
  2. Changing vowels on one pitch:
[iː] – [eː] – [aː] – [oː] – [uː] (forward placement, no jaw clench).
  3. Portamento – slide between two notes (e.g., C–E–C) on [aː].
