Virar-alibaug Multimodal Corridor Route Map
The Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor (VAMC) is a 126-kilometer mega-infrastructure project designed to slash travel time between the northern and southern fringes of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Currently, this journey takes roughly four hours; the corridor aims to reduce that to under 60 minutes. Route Overview & Districts Covered
The corridor acts as a massive ring road, bypassing the heavy traffic of central Mumbai. It traverses four key districts: Palghar, Thane, Mumbai Suburban, and Raigad. Starting Point: Navghar (near Virar) in Palghar district.
Ending Point: Balavali/Chowk (near Alibaug) in Raigad district.
Major Intersections: The route is strategically planned to link with several national landmarks and highways, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway (NH-8), the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Managed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the project is divided into two primary phases: Phase 1 Navghar (Virar) to Balavali Phase 2 Balavali to Alibaug Key Technical Features
Lane Configuration: An expressway with 8 to 14 lanes, supporting speeds up to 120 km/h.
Multimodal Integration: True to its name, the corridor isn't just for cars. It is designed to house a Metro line, dedicated bus lanes, and utilities like water and gas pipelines within a single right-of-way. Estimated Cost: Approximately ₹55,000 crore. Part 6: The Impact of the Route on
Current Status: While land acquisition has faced delays, the project is currently slated for completion by 2030. Why It Matters
The VAMC is expected to be a game-changer for regional logistics. By connecting the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) directly to northern manufacturing hubs, it will divert heavy freight traffic away from city roads, significantly reducing urban congestion and pollution. Part 6: The Impact of the Route on Local Geography
The VAMC route map effectively creates a Third Ring Road for Mumbai.
- Current Ring 1: The Western & Eastern Express Highways (Inside city).
- Current Ring 2: The Ghodbunder Road / Airoli Bridge (Thane-Navi Mumbai).
- VAMC Ring 3: Virar - Vasai - Bhiwandi - Panvel - Alibaug.
This means a resident in Virar can theoretically reach Alibaug in 90 minutes (vs current 4+ hours). The map shows that the corridor will cut the distance between the proposed Navi Mumbai Airport (NMIA) and Virar to just 60 km.
4. Multimodal Features
- Dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in median.
- Wide shoulders for emergency & future metro/light rail.
- Utility corridor (water, gas, fiber optics).
- Truck lay-bys & EV charging stations at intervals.
4. The Eastern Spine: Navi Mumbai to Panvel
This is the most developed segment of the route map. The VAMC aligns closely with the existing Shilphata Road and runs parallel to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway for a stretch.
- Shilphata Interchange: Links the VAMC to Mumbra and Dombivli.
- Kalyan-Shilphata Road: A vital connector for commuters from Kalyan looking to head to Alibaug without entering Navi Mumbai.
- Panvel: The map shows a massive cloverleaf interchange at Panvel. Here, the VAMC intersects the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) access road and the Sion-Panvel Expressway.
Segment 4: Thane to Navi Mumbai
- Kalwa – Passing east of Kalwa.
- Mumbra – Elevated section over Mumbra bypass.
- Parsik Tunnel (proposed) – Through Parsik Hill.
- Belapur – Connects to Sion–Panvel Highway & Nerul.
