Aquarius Musikindo, a then-burgeoning entertainment company that understood the nuance of localizing humor and pathos. The directive was clear: do not simply translate; transcreate. The Indonesian script had to maintain the Shakespearean gravitas of Hamlet (on which the film is loosely based) while ensuring the comedy of Timon and Pumbaa landed with a local audience unfamiliar with meerkats and warthogs.
