Title: [Discussion] Has anyone else dived into the v02072024 experimental branch? The Seafloor changes are unsettling.
Hey survivors,
I just updated to build v02072024 (Steam experimental branch) to check out the latest changes before they push it to stable, and I have some thoughts.
First off, the optimization improvements are immediately noticeable. My frames are finally stable in the Kelp Forests, which used to be a slideshow for me. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about. While there is no official game version specifically
Did they stealth-change the Crabsnake behavior? I was exploring a Jellyshroom Cave, and usually, these guys are predictable. However, in v02072024, I swear they are much more aggressive about leaving their mushrooms to chase you. I had one chase the Seamoth way further than usual. It felt genuinely scary again.
The Blueprint Bug: Is anyone else having trouble with the Moonpool fragments? I scanned two in the Grassy Plateaus, and the progress bar is stuck at 2/3. I’m worried this build might have broken fragment counting for the earlier blueprints.
The Good Stuff:
- The lighting engine tweaks are beautiful. The way the light refracts through the creepvines at sunset is incredible.
- The PDA interface feels snappier.
Has anyone else found anything weird in this build? I haven’t braved the Lost River yet in this save, but I’m curious if the Ghost Leviathan pathing is fixed.
Stay safe out there, and keep an eye on your oxygen. Title: [Discussion] Has anyone else dived into the
[OOC Note: Assuming "v02072024" refers to a specific update version date (February 7th, 2024), this post is written as a fictional "experimental branch" update log, as the game is fully released and no longer gets daily experimental builds of this nature. If this version number refers to a specific mod or a custom scenario, let me know and I can adjust the content!]**
Part 6: Is It Legal? The Ethical Discussion
Let’s be direct.
- If you own Subnautica on Steam/Epic/GOG: Downloading v02072024 as a backup of code you already licensed is legally grey but generally accepted as "fair use" for preservation.
- If you do not own a license: Downloading this build is piracy. Unknown Worlds Entertainment is an indie studio that relies on sales to fund Subnautica 2. The developers have explicitly stated that they support modding and offline archival for existing owners, but not distribution to non-owners.
“We love that people want to preserve our game. But if you didn’t pay for it, please buy it on sale. It’s often 70% off.” – Anonymous UWE Developer (Discord, 2024)
Compatibility and risks
- Unofficial build: Not supported by the official developers; using it may void support and can corrupt saves.
- Multiplayer: Subnautica is single-player—mods/builds do not enable official multiplayer and mixing modded and vanilla files can cause issues.
- Antivirus/launcher flags: Custom executables may be flagged; verify source integrity and use caution.
- Version mismatches: May conflict with other mods; follow compatibility notes in the distribution.
2. The "Living Large" Stabilization
The Living Large update (2023) added quality-of-life features but introduced bugs with the Neptune Rocket and base rendering. By July 2024, the community had reverse-engineered the most stable combination of executable files and asset bundles. v02072024 represents that "sweet spot" between the new features and minimal crashes.
C. The Emergency Ascent (The "Yo-Yo")
- Interacting with the Deep Point allows the player to initiate an Emergency Ascent.
- The player grabs a mechanized harness and is rapidly winched up the cable toward the Surface Point.
- Constraint: This generates massive noise (approx. 50m aggro range) and consumes 100 Energy from the base.
- Purpose: A panic button for when the Prawn Suit is lost, or the Seaglide is out of power, but using it guarantees waking up nearby predators.
3. The "Return of the Terraformer"
Perhaps the most sought-after feature of this build is the return of the Terraformer tool—removed in 2017 for causing performance issues. In v02072024, the Terraformer is back, but with a bug: destroying a voxel of land also removes the water properties for that column. You can create "air pits" at the bottom of the ocean, essentially walking on the seafloor as if on the moon. However, doing so permanently breaks the game’s oxygen simulation.
