Humanity has spread across the stars. Rival space empires—corporate syndicates, technocratic collectives, and remnants of old Earth nations—vie for control of resource-rich systems, ancient alien ruins, and the key to a technology that can reshape reality: Vacuum Engineering (V-tech).
Before examining individual branches, it is crucial to understand the three core principles that govern SE5’s research system:
Theoretical vs. Applied Research: The tree is split into two major categories. Theoretical technologies (like Physics, Chemistry, or Biology) don’t give you new ships or weapons directly. Instead, they unlock Applied technologies (like Energy Stream Weapons or Armor). You must invest heavily in theory before you can build practical war machines. space empires v tech tree
Levels Matter, Not Just Unlocks: In most games, researching a tech just gives you a component. In SE5, each tech has up to 100 levels. A Level 5 "Missile" is vastly inferior to a Level 50 "Missile." The race for higher tech levels never truly ends—it defines the eras of the game.
The Quadrant System: The tech tree is visualized as a series of "quadrants" (like the standard Windows UI of the 2000s). You don't scroll linearly; you click between screens representing different fields: Weapons, Propulsion, Construction, Biology, etc. Premise Humanity has spread across the stars
To get Phased Shields (high-end defense):
Physics (5) → Shielding (5) → Phased Shields (1) → Phased Shields (5) → Phased-Shield Generator V.
To get Heavy Mount (weapon boost):
Construction (3) → Weapons (2) → Weapon Mounts (2) → Heavy Mount (3). Theoretical vs
