Title: [GUIDE/DISCUSSION] Rooting the Moto G 5G (2022) - Is it hot or not?

Body:

Hey everyone,

I’ve been trying to squeeze some more life (and battery efficiency) out of my Moto G 5G 2022 (XT2213-4). I use it as a secondary device, but lately, stock Android 13 has been laggy, and the thermals get surprisingly toasty just scrolling through TikTok. The Moto G 5G (2022) Go to product

I decided to go down the root rabbit hole. Here is my log of the process, the pitfalls, and the current "temperature check" on whether this is worth doing in 2024/2025.

Q: I rooted my Moto G 5G 2022 and now the phone is hot while charging. Is that normal?

A: No. Root can disable “thermal throttling while charging.” Use a Magisk module called “ACC” (Advanced Charging Controller) to limit charging current to 1500mA and temperature to 40°C.

Useful Resources (Backup Before Rooting)

Disclaimer: Rooting voids warranty. Proceed at your own risk. Always backup your data.

Critical Warning Before You Begin:

  • Unlocking the bootloader (required for root) will void your warranty.
  • It will also trigger the "Device is corrupted" boot screen (harmless, but permanent).
  • It will factory reset your phone (wipe all data). Backup everything.
  • Widevine L1 (HD Netflix/Disney+) often degrades to L3 (SD only) after unlocking.
  • SafetyNet/Play Integrity will fail, breaking Google Pay and some banking apps (can be fixed with Magisk modules).

Step 2: Safe Fixes for Overheating – Root Moto G 5G (2022) HOT Solutions

Here are proven fixes that retain root access while restoring normal thermals. Title: [GUIDE/DISCUSSION] Rooting the Moto G 5G (2022)

The Current Status: Is Root Even Available?

Short answer: Yes, but with a major asterisk.

Unlike the heyday of the Moto G series, the 2022 model (XT2213-4 / XT2213-2) ships with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset. MediaTek devices are notoriously harder to root than Qualcomm Snapdragons because they lack the easy fastboot boot recovery method.

As of early 2026, here is the reality:

  • Bootloader Unlock: Officially supported by Motorola (takes 7–14 days to get a key).
  • Custom Recovery: No official TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) for Austin.
  • Root Method: Requires patching the init_boot (not boot) image via Magisk and flashing via fastboot.

Because there is no custom recovery, you are rooting "blindly" via a PC. One wrong flash = hard brick.

Step 4: Reboot

Once the process finishes (it should say "Finished" or "OKAY"), reboot your device:

fastboot reboot

The Specs (for reference)

  • Device: Motorola Moto G 5G (2022)
  • Codename: austin
  • SoC: MediaTek Dimensity 700 (MT6833)
  • The Problem: MediaTek + Motorola’s bootloader = Pain.

Required Files:

  • Motorola USB Drivers (Official)
  • MTK USB Drivers (for MediaTek BROM mode)
  • SDK Platform Tools (ADB & Fastboot)
  • Magisk APK (v27.0 or newer)
  • Stock Firmware for your specific model (XT2213-*). Download from Lolinet Mirrors.
  • Python (for the mtkclient tool – the only way to unlock the bootloader on later updates).
