Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition Library v2.0
Imaging control to replace the Wang/Kodak Image Edit controls

Posted:   Monday February 03, 2003
Updated:   Monday December 26, 2011

Applies to:   VB4-32, VB5, VB6
Developed with:   VB6, VBScript (for included demos)
OS restrictions:   Windows XP; for Windows 2000 see Prerequisites and Comments below
Author:   Microsoft

 Prerequisites
Developed as a XP alternative to the Wang/Kodak controls for Windows XP.

The Microsoft download page for this dll states the "Supported Operating Systems" is Windows XP, and that "Windows Image Acquisition Automation Library v2.0 is only supported on Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed." The dll relies on GDI+ available under Windows XP. I have also received reports the dll can also be used on Windows 2000 systems, though possibly only those with the latest service packs. Please see the Comments below.

Developers wanting to add image and image device control functionality to their applications will and to check out this new, redistributable dll provided by Microsoft intended to replace functionality introduced with the Wang and Kodak image controls provided in older versions of Windows. Prior to the introduction of Windows XP, the Wang/Kodak control and libraries formed part of the operating system installation (were not redistributable) and provided the only inherent means to offer imaging display and manipulation without relying on third-party controls. However, Kodak Imaging for Windows program and the related controls (ImgScan.ocx, ImgAdmin.ocx, ImgEdit.ocx, and ImgThumb.ocx) are not included with Windows XP.

The readme file indicates the Windows Image Acquisition Library v2.0 is only designed to support the PNG, BMP, JPG, GIF and TIFF image formats. It should not be relied upon to support other formats, though they may appear to be supported depending on system configuration.

The download contains the dll, help files, installation instructions and a rash of assorted VB-based demos (and no, it does not contain the image shown ... that's my desktop background):

For users with genuine Samsung-branded sets (rather than a replacement board), it is recommended to use official sources:

Samsung Download Center: Search by model code on the Official Samsung Support Site.

Automatic Updates: Navigate to Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now on your TV to check for official OTA updates.

Caution: Flashing third-party firmware carries a risk of "bricking" your device. Ensure your board model exactly matches before proceeding. Manuals & Software | Official Samsung Support US

While "nm368818" is often associated with specific firmware update queries for Samsung devices, it is not a direct firmware download link or a specific model number. Instead, it typically refers to a support identifier or a common search string for Samsung Smart TV software updates.

To create a complete guide for updating your device, follow the steps below based on your preferred method. Method 1: Direct Internet Update (Recommended)

This is the simplest way to ensure your device is running the latest software provided by the manufacturer.

Navigate to Settings: Use your remote to open the Smart Hub or Home menu and go to Settings.

Access Support: Scroll down to select All Settings (if available) and then choose Support.

Check for Updates: Select Software Update and then choose Update Now. What is the nm368818 firmware used for

Note: If the "Software Update" option is greyed out, try switching your source to Live TV first, then return to the menu.

Download and Install: If an update is found, the device will download and install it automatically. Do not turn off your device during this process. Method 2: Manual Update via USB

Use this method if your device is not connected to the internet or if the direct update fails.

Find Your Model Code: Go to Settings > Support > About This TV (or "About Phone" for mobile devices) to find your specific model number.

Download Firmware: Visit the official Samsung Support Page or search for your model on the Manual & Software page. Prepare the USB Drive:

Download the firmware file (usually a .zip or .exe file) to your computer. Unzip/Extract the file. You should see a single folder.

Copy the extracted folder to the root directory of a clean USB drive. Install on Device: Insert the USB drive into your device's USB port. Navigate back to Settings > Support > Software Update.

Select Update Now. The device will prompt you to search the USB drive for the update. Method 3: Enable Auto Updates

To prevent the need for manual guides in the future, you can set your device to update itself automatically. Go to Settings > Support > Software Update.

Select Auto Update and toggle it to On. Your device will now download and apply updates while you are watching or when you next turn the device on. Install Official Firmware on Any Samsung Galaxy

Before looking for a link, you must confirm your exact model. "NM368818" is often a general board identifier, but the firmware may vary based on screen resolution (e.g.,

Check the Label: Look for a sticker on the back of your TV or on the internal green circuit board (motherboard). Once I have a better understanding of your

Menu Settings: Navigate to Settings > Support > About this TV to find your specific model code and current software version. 2. Locate the Firmware Download Link

Official sources are always safer than third-party forum links.

Manufacturer Support: Visit the official support page for your brand (e.g., Samsung Support or Haier Support) and enter your model number.

Technical Communities: If using a generic Chinese motherboard (common for NM368818), reliable tech communities or specific firmware repositories on platforms like Telegram often host archived versions. 3. Preparation Requirements

USB Drive: Use a blank USB flash drive formatted to FAT32 or NTFS.

Decompression Tool: Most firmware links provide a .zip or .rar file. You must extract these using a PC so the .bin or update folder is in the root directory of the USB drive (not inside another folder). 4. Installation Steps

There are two primary ways to apply the update once you have the file:

Part 6: Avoiding Fake "NM368818 Firmware Link" Scams

Red Flags to watch for:

  • Password-protected archives: Scammers sell "unlock passwords" for $20.
  • .exe files under 50KB: These are downloader trojans.
  • Links from: mediafire.com, sendspace.com, or 4shared.com for firmware.
  • YouTube videos with links in the description: 90% are phishing for crypto wallets.

Verdict: Never trust a direct link provided in a forum post from 2018. Use only real-time, manufacturer-signed packages.

Prerequisites:

  • USB-to-TTL adapter (FTDI, CP2102, CH340) – unless your board has built-in USB.
  • Jumper wires.
  • Flashing software (STM32CubeProgrammer, avrdude, or LPCXpresso).
  • The firmware file (renamed to firmware.bin for simplicity).

Instructions for proper installation of the dll and the help files are included in the readme.txt located in the main installation directory. The readme.txt in the samples folder contains the information above. Developers using wiaaut.dll are granted license to freely redistribute the library with their application as detailed in the redist.txt file inside the zip. (Only this dll is listed in this file, so  don't overwrite your VB directory's redist.txt with this file!)

This file is provided by VBnet as a service to developers. Any support issues for this product should not be sent to VBnet.

 Comments
If the file 'gdiplus.dll' is installed on a Windows 2000 machine but not properly registered, calls to wiaaut.dll (the imaging dll) will not work. After registering gdiplus.dll calls to wiaaut should succeed.
