TomTom Rider 600 Review: Is This the Ultimate Motorcycle GPS for 2025?
For decades, motorcyclists have faced a unique tech dilemma. Smartphones are fragile, susceptible to vibration damage ("camera death"), and useless in rain or with gloves on. Dedicated car GPS units lack the ruggedness and specific routing needs of a motorcycle.
Enter the new TomTom Rider 600. Recently unveiled by the Dutch navigation giant, this device aims to reset the benchmark for what a motorcycle sat-nav should be. But in a world where smartphone apps like Calimoto and REVER are getting better every year, does the Rider 600 justify its premium price tag?
I have spent the last three weeks testing the 600 on everything from highway slogs to twisty Alpine passes. Here is everything you need to know. new tomtom rider 600
Seamless Smartphone Integration (The "Connected" Factor)
TomTom has finally solved the companion app puzzle. The new TomTom Rider 600 syncs wirelessly via Bluetooth to the TomTom Rider smartphone app (available for iOS and Android). Here is what that unlocks:
- Live Traffic & Speed Cameras: Unlike standalone GPS units of the past that required USB updates, the Rider 600 uses your phone's data connection for real-time traffic jams and mobile speed traps.
- Message & Call Handling: Notifications appear discreetly on the left side of the screen. You cannot read a novel, but you can see who is calling or that your passenger sent a "Need gas" message.
- Route Sharing: Plan a route on your couch using the large phone app, then tap "Send to Device." It arrives on the Rider 600 in seconds via the cloud.
Off-Road and Adventure Features
TomTom is clearly chasing the Garmin Tread and Zumo XT customers here. The Rider 600 comes pre-loaded with thousands of recorded off-road tracks and the ability to import GPX files effortlessly via WiFi. TomTom Rider 600 Review: Is This the Ultimate
Unlike the old Rider 550, which required a USB cable and a computer, the 600 has a built-in WiFi 6 chip. You connect your phone via the TomTom MyDrive app (which has been completely redesigned), and syncing a route from Komoot or Rever takes about 15 seconds.
The screen is glove-friendly. I tested this with thick Klim snowmobile gloves and thin summer leather gloves; the capacitive touchscreen recognized input instantly. It also has a "rain mode" where you can disable the touchscreen to prevent water drop false triggers, relying purely on the physical buttons on the side. Hardware
- Display: 4.3-inch touchscreen display.
- Note: While smaller than modern smartphones, it is optimized for glove use and sunlight readability.
- Durability: Rated IPX7 waterproof. It is designed to withstand heavy rain and dust, a critical feature lacking in most smartphones.
- Battery: Integrated battery rated for up to 6 hours of operation.
- Mounting: Comes with a specialized RAM mounting system designed to absorb motorcycle vibrations, protecting the device's internal components.
Ideal For:
- Iron Butt Riders: You need battery life and durability that phones can't provide.
- Adventure Tourers: Going off-grid where cell service is zero? The Rider 600 has pre-loaded global maps and works offline entirely.
- Riders with Aging Eyes: That 6-inch screen is a lifesaver compared to a 5.4-inch iPhone.
- Wet Weather Commuters: The glove-friendly tech is a winter game-changer.
Who should buy the new TomTom Rider 600?
Buy this if: You are a passionate sport-touring rider or an ADV rider who loves seeking out the most convoluted, twisty backroads. You hate the anxiety of your phone overheating or falling off the bike. You want a "set it and forget it" device that just works in heavy rain.
Don't buy this if: You only commute in a straight line (use your phone). You are on a tight budget (look for a used Rider 550). Or you only ride within 50 miles of home and know the roads by heart.
See More. Ride Safer.
The 6-inch display is the largest in the Rider series, offering crystal-clear visibility in direct sunlight. Unlike standard GPS units, the Rider 600 features super-bright anti-glare technology and a fully laminated screen that eliminates fogging. Whether you are riding through a snowstorm or a desert heatwave, the IPX7 waterproof rating ensures it survives the worst weather (and the deepest puddles).
