Edge- Catalyst — Mirror-s
Feature: Mirror’s Edge Catalyst – Open World First-Person Action Adventure
Storyline
The game's storyline follows Faith as she returns to her hometown of Glass after a five-year absence. Faith's sister, Taki, has gone missing, and Faith receives a cryptic message from her. As Faith searches for Taki, she becomes embroiled in a conspiracy involving a corrupt government agency called the "National Security and Enforcement Division" (NSED).
Throughout the game, Faith encounters various characters, including her fellow Runners, who help her on her quest to find Taki and uncover the truth about the NSED. Along the way, Faith discovers that Taki was involved in a resistance movement against the NSED, and that her disappearance is linked to a larger plot to suppress dissent and control the population. City of Glass
The city of Glass is a futuristic metropolis with a unique blend of Asian and Western architectural styles. The city is divided into several districts, each with its own character and challenges. The city is filled with tall skyscrapers, cramped alleyways, and abandoned buildings, providing a rich environment for parkour and exploration. Story Mode: The main single-player campaign, where players
3. Technical Pillars
| Aspect | Requirement | |--------|-------------| | Frame Rate | 60 FPS target (first-person movement precision) | | Streaming | Seamless asset load while wall-running at high speed | | Physics | Predictive animation blending (hands, feet align with ledges) | | Audio | Dynamic footstep material, wind speed = movement speed | Tree: 3 branches – Movement (speed/stamina)
Game Modes
Mirror's Edge Catalyst features several game modes:
- Story Mode: The main single-player campaign, where players follow Faith's journey as she searches for Taki and uncovers the conspiracy involving the NSED.
- Time Trial: A mode where players compete to complete levels as quickly as possible, with leaderboards and rewards for the fastest times.
- Speedrun: A mode where players compete to complete levels as quickly as possible, with an emphasis on exploiting glitches and optimizing routes.
- Free Run: A mode where players can explore the city without any objectives or time limits, allowing them to practice their parkour skills and discover new routes.
Pros:
- Arguably the best first-person movement system ever made.
- Gorgeous, minimalist art direction that holds up today.
- No guns. The kinetic combat is rewarding.
- Massive world to explore (if you enjoy repetition).
The "Open World" Problem: Combat and Pacing
While the movement is elite, the structure of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst draws criticism. To justify the open world, DICE introduced Ubisoft-style tower climbing. To unlock new delivery missions and reveal the map, Faith must hack "GridNodes" by climbing massive, puzzle-like structures. These are fun the first three times; by the tenth, they feel like padding.
2.1 Open World: "Glass, The City of Tomorrow"
- Seamless Traversal: No loading screens between districts. Players flow from street level to skyscraper rooftops.
- Dynamic Districts: Three main zones (Downtown, The Anchor, The View) each with unique verticality, color palette, and traversal challenges.
- Fast Travel via "GridNodes": Unlockable zip-line and mag-rope points for quick cross-map movement.
- No Minimap: Navigation via 3D runner’s vision (red objects) and environmental cues.
2.4 Progression System: "Runner's Path"
- Tree: 3 branches – Movement (speed/stamina), Combat (disarm/recovery), Awareness (runner vision range, threat detection).
- No XP from kills: XP from chaining moves, beating time trials, and completing delivery missions.
- Skill Nodes: Found in world (hidden behind wall runs/breakable doors) for side upgrades.
