In the year 1453, a 13-year-old boy named Luka lived in the great city of Constantinople. He was an apprentice in the Hagia Sophia library, sweeping floors and organizing scrolls.
One cold April morning, Emperor Constantine XI himself arrived. The Ottomans, led by Sultan Mehmed II, had surrounded the city walls. The Emperor looked tired.
“Luka,” he said, “the walls will fall soon. But our Greek and Roman knowledge must not burn. We have Plato’s Republic, Aristotle’s Physics, and maps of the ancient world.”
The Emperor handed Luka a small, heavy chest. “Take the most precious scrolls. Go to the harbor. Find the Venetian ship.”
Luka hid the chest under his wool cloak. He ran through the streets, dodging falling stones from cannons. Soldiers were fighting everywhere. As he passed the Church of the Holy Apostles, an Ottoman arrow struck a pillar just above his head. He didn't stop.
When he reached the Golden Horn harbor, the Venetian ship was raising its sail. The captain shouted, “Hurry, boy!”
Luka jumped across the widening gap of water, landing hard on the deck. The chest was safe.
What happened next?
Constantinople fell on May 29, 1453. But Luka’s ship sailed to Venice, Italy. The ancient scrolls arrived safely in the library of San Marco.
