The story of the Huawei MediaPad T1 7.0 (T1-701u) and its custom ROM journey is one of community-driven revival for an aging budget tablet. Originally released around 2015, this 7-inch device was a modest entry-level slate powered by a Spreadtrum SC7731G

(or in some variants, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200/400) and usually ran Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. The Quest for Modernity

For many users, the "story" began when Huawei stopped providing official updates. Stuck on KitKat, the tablet eventually lost compatibility with modern apps and security standards. This pushed the enthusiast community on forums like XDA Developers to take matters into their own hands. The Custom ROM Landscape

Because the T1-701u uses a relatively obscure Spreadtrum chipset, development was significantly more difficult than for mainstream Qualcomm-based devices. However, several milestones defined its custom software history: Rooting and TWRP Recovery

: The first chapter always involved unlocking the bootloader and installing TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project)

. This custom recovery was the "skeleton key" that allowed users to flash unofficial software and perform full system backups. CyanogenMod & LineageOS : Early efforts focused on porting CyanogenMod 11

(Android 4.4) to provide a cleaner, "Stock Android" experience away from Huawei's heavy EMUI skin. Later, developers attempted builds of

, the successor to CyanogenMod, which remains the gold standard for custom ROMs. Performance Optimization

: Many ROMs for the T1-701u weren't just about newer Android versions; they were about speed. Since the device only has 1GB of RAM

, "Lite" or "Debloated" ROMs were popular for stripping out background services to make the tablet usable for basic web browsing and reading. Why People Still Flash It

The motivation behind the T1-701u custom ROM story is usually e-waste prevention . By installing a custom ROM, users can: Extend App Support

: Move to slightly newer Android versions (like Android 5.1 Lollipop or 6.0 Marshmallow) to keep apps like YouTube or Spotify running. Remove Bloatware

: Delete pre-installed Huawei apps that hog limited internal storage.

: Use ROMs that don't rely heavily on Google services for a more private experience.

It wasn't all success stories. Flashing custom firmware on the T1-701u carried risks of "bricking" (making the device unbootable) or losing hardware functionality like the

Disclaimer

Installing a custom ROM on the Huawei T1-701u voids the warranty of the device. Users who install custom ROMs do so at their own risk. The author and the website are not responsible for any damage or issues that may arise from installing a custom ROM.

The Huawei T1-701u originally launched with Android 4.4 KitKat, which is now largely obsolete for modern applications. Users frequently find that a custom ROM is necessary to bypass performance bottlenecks and dated software. The Experience: Pros & Cons

Performance Boost: Stock firmware is often bogged down by EMUI bloatware. A lightweight custom ROM can slightly improve menu snappiness and memory management.

Extended Life: Custom ROMs allow you to run newer apps that require a higher Android API level, though don't expect it to handle modern gaming or heavy multitasking.

Hardware Conflicts: A common issue with T1-701u ROMs is that hardware features like the camera, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth may become unstable or stop working entirely.

Installation Difficulty: Huawei no longer provides official bootloader unlock codes. You typically must use third-party paid tools like DC-Unlocker to unlock the device before you can even begin the process. Recommended ROMs & Availability

There is no "official" LineageOS for this specific model, and development is largely community-driven on forums like XDA Developers.

Lightweight AOSP/GSI: Since this device has a MediaTek MT6572 chipset, some users have had success with ported versions of older ROMs or universal GSIs.

Repacked Official ROMs: Some developers offer "debloated" versions of the original Chinese firmware that include root access and remove "Google-junk" to free up resources. Verdict

3. MIUI Port (v7/v8 based on KitKat)

  • Best for: Xiaomi fans who want a fresh look.
  • Features: MIUI app drawer (optional), theme store, control center.
  • Pros: Beautiful UI, good RAM management.
  • Cons: Heavy for 1GB RAM; may lag with multiple apps.

Step 2: Flashing TWRP Recovery

Because this is a Spreadtrum device, we cannot flash recovery via fastboot (it often corrupts the partition table). Instead, use the SPD Research Tool.

  1. Open ResearchDownload.exe as Administrator.
  2. Load the Scatter File (included in the TWRP folder).
  3. Select "Download only". Uncheck all partitions except RECOVERY.
  4. Navigate to your twrp_3.2.3_t1u71.img and assign it to the Recovery path.
  5. Power off the tablet completely. Hold Volume Down and plug in the USB cable.
  6. ResearchDownload will detect the device (COM port appears). Click "Start Download".
  7. Wait for "Download Complete". Disconnect. Hold Volume Up + Power to boot into TWRP.

2. AOSP 9.0 (Pie) – The Experimental Build

Stability: 4/10 | Daily Driver: No Some developers on 4pda (Russian forum) ported a generic SC7731G Pie GSI (Generic System Image) to the T1-701u.

  • Pros: Modern UI, Dark theme, native screen recording.
  • Cons: Massive RAM consumption (500MB+ idle), Wi-Fi drops on sleep, random soft reboots.
  • Warning: Only for tinkerers who don't mind losing data.

Step 1: Unlocking the Bootloader

Huawei no longer provides unlock codes for this device. We use a backdoor.

  1. Enable Developer Options (Tap Build Number 7 times).
  2. Enable "OEM Unlock" and "USB Debugging".
  3. Connect to PC. Open Terminal (CMD) and run: adb reboot bootloader
  4. You will see a black screen with "=> FASTBOOT". Run: fastboot oem unlock 1234567890123456 (Use 16 random digits; the bootloader doesn't actually check the code on this old Spreadtrum).
  5. The tablet will factory reset. Bootloader is now unlocked.

Enabling Swap (ZRAM)

The T1-701u has 1GB RAM, but Android uses 300MB. Enable ZRAM to compress memory.

  • Install Kernel Adiutor.
  • Go to Virtual Memory → Set ZRAM to 512MB.
  • Set Swappiness to 60.

1. LineageOS 14.1 (Android 7.1.2) – The Gold Standard

Stability: 8/10 | Daily Driver: Yes This is the most stable custom ROM available. It strips away Google's heavy UI (Project Huru) and uses the lightweight Trebuchet launcher.

  • Works: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, MicroSD, Audio, HW Acceleration.
  • Doesn't work: Camera (front and rear) is buggy; GPS has a 30-second lock delay.
  • Best for: Browsing, eBooks, YouTube Vanced (legacy), Spotify.
