Why it’s popular: A historical Viking epic with incredible character development. The Hook: Young Thorfinn watches his father be killed by the charismatic mercenary Askeladd. He joins the mercenary band to get revenge, but over years of violence, he begins to question whether his quest for vengeance is destroying his soul. Recommendation Insight: The first arc is violent revenge; the second arc (Farmland Saga) is a philosophical meditation on pacifism. It is Game of Thrones level writing with zero filler.
