F%c3%adsica Universitaria %28sears-zemansky Vol. 1. 13da Ed.%29
Unit 3: Thermodynamics (Chapters 17–20)
Chapter 17: Temperature and Heat
Thermal expansion, calorimetry, phase changes, and heat transfer mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation). The 13th edition uses practical examples: why thermometers use mercury, how a Thermos bottle works.
Chapter 18: Thermal Properties of Matter
Equation of state for ideal gases, kinetic theory of gases, specific heats, and equipartition of energy. The derivation of pressure from molecular collisions is particularly lucid. Física universitaria (Sears–Zemansky), Vol
Chapters 19–20: The Laws of Thermodynamics
The first law (internal energy, work, heat) and second law (entropy, heat engines, Carnot cycle, refrigerators). The 13th edition includes a careful discussion of reversible vs. irreversible processes and introduces statistical interpretation of entropy without overwhelming calculus. First-year Engineering students: (Civil
Why the 13th Edition? Comparison with Older and Newer Editions
The 13th edition occupies a sweet spot. Compared to the 12th edition, the 13th offers: no-fluff introduction to Newtonian mechanics
- Improved full-color illustrations and three-dimensional vector diagrams.
- More integrated use of digital resources (although the Spanish digital access may vary).
- Updated examples (e.g., wind turbines for rotational energy, smartphones for accelerometer experiments).
Compared to the 14th or 15th editions (English), the 13th is often more affordable and still widely used in Latin American and Spanish universities. The core physics has not changed – only the peripheral examples and online homework systems (MasteringPhysics) have been upgraded. For self-study, the 13th edition is fully sufficient.
Caution: If your course uses the 14th or 15th edition, problem numbers and some sections (e.g., relativistic momentum in Vol. 2) have been reorganized. However, for Volume 1 (classical mechanics, waves, thermodyn), content compatibility is >95%.
Who Should Buy It?
- First-year Engineering students: (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial). You will use the kinematics and dynamics from Volume 1 for the rest of your career.
- Physics majors: This is your foundation. Master it.
- Self-learners with calculus background: If you want a rigorous, no-fluff introduction to Newtonian mechanics, this is better than any pop-science book.
