DVD Next Copy Oceans Xstream Review: Is This Vintage DVD Ripper Still a Hidden Gem?
Date: May 6, 2026 Category: Software Review / Digital Archiving Rating: ⭐⭐⭐½☆ (3.5/5)
In the golden era of physical media—roughly 2005 to 2015—DVD ripping software was a battleground. Names like DVDFab, AnyDVD, and HandBrake dominated the conversation. However, lurking in the shadows of forums and obscure download sites was a suite of tools known as Oceans Xstream, with their flagship product: DVD Next Copy.
Today, with streaming reigning supreme, you might wonder why anyone would review a piece of software that looks like it was designed for Windows XP. But with the resurgence of physical media collecting and the fear of streaming "licensing removal" (looking at you, Westworld and Final Space), many users are digging out their old DVD libraries. This raises the question: Is DVD Next Copy Oceans Xstream worth your bandwidth in 2026?
I spent a week testing this vintage software on modern hardware (Windows 11 and an M2 Mac via Parallels) to see if it can still slay the dragons of CSS encryption, region codes, and Sony ARccOS protection.
Final Score: 6.8/10
DVD Next Copy Oceans Xstream is a relic. It is not the best DVD ripper, nor is it the safest. But it has a stubborn personality. It refuses to die, and it will chew through a coffee-stained, cat-scratched copy of Shrek 2 long after modern software has thrown a "Read Error" and given up. Dvd Next Copy Oceans Xstream Review
If you can find a clean, adware-free copy (or already own a license key from a decade ago), keep it as a secondary tool in your digital archiving arsenal. But if you are new to DVD ripping, skip the waves—stick to MakeMKV for decryption and HandBrake for compression.

Installation & User Interface: First Impressions
The installation process is straightforward—a 45MB download that expands to approximately 150MB. Be cautious during installation; like many DVD utilities, the free version tries to install optional browser toolbars or adware. Always select "Custom Installation" to decline these extras.
Once launched, the interface is split into three panes:
- Left: Source selection (DVD drive or ISO folder).
- Center: Preview window.
- Right: Profile selection and output settings.
Is it intuitive? Moderately so. Beginners might feel overwhelmed by the 200+ profiles, but a search bar helps. The "Oceans Xstream" mode is a one-click option that auto-detects the longest title (usually the main movie) and picks the best MP4 settings. DVD Next Copy Oceans Xstream Review: Is This
Common Complaints & Solutions from User Reviews
Scouring forums, here are two frequent criticisms and how to fix them:
Complaint 1: "The output file is 8GB! I wanted a smaller file." Solution: Go to Settings > Encoder > Change RF value to 22 (higher = smaller file). The default "Quality" preset prioritizes sharpness, not size.
Complaint 2: "The software crashes when reading scratched discs." Solution: Enable the "Skip Read Errors" check box in the advanced drive settings. This can recover 90% of a damaged disc, though you may lose a few frames.
Who Should Buy This?
- Casual users with a large library of older DVDs (pre-2018).
- Cord-cutters who want to download free catch-up TV from local broadcasters (e.g., PBS, CBC, BBC) for offline viewing.
- Windows users who hate command-line tools like youtube-dl.
You want `apt install clamav` instead of `apt upgrade clamav`. `apt upgrade` installs all available updates for all packages installed on the system, and the `clamav` after it has no effect.
A more complete command would be `apt install clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam`, that will also update related packages.
Thanks for the blog post! Somehow I didn’t think to update clamav to fix the problem.
Thanks for comment! well we did it successfully with ‘apt upgrade’ on several debian 10, after that freshclam will do updates again, note. apt install triggers the upgrade for an already installed package. note. we haven’t done it on ubuntu yet!
