Dolphin 360 Emulator: Complete Setup & Usage Guide

GameCube Example (e.g., Super Mario Sunshine)

  1. Double-click game in the list.
  2. Controller automatically works as standard GC pad.
    • Left stick = move
    • A/B/X/Y = GC A/B/X/Y
    • Triggers = Analog L/R (note: 360 triggers are analog, perfect for FLUDD)
    • Start/Back = GC Start/Pause

The Future of Dolphin on Xbox

Microsoft has not shut down this practice because Developer Mode is explicitly for experimentation. However, in late 2023, Microsoft briefly blocked emulators in Retail Mode. As of 2025, the safe haven remains Developer Mode. The community is working on a "native" Xbox port that leverages DirectX 12 Ultimate for even better performance.

Is it legal?

  • Owning and using the Dolphin emulator is legal.
  • Dumping and using game ROMs/ISOs you do not own is illegal in many jurisdictions. Use only legally obtained game files and system files.

Setting up Xbox 360 controller

  1. Connect your Xbox 360 wired or wireless controller (wireless requires a receiver).
  2. Install drivers if Windows prompts; Xbox controllers are plug-and-play on modern Windows.
  3. In Dolphin: Controllers → GameCube Controllers (or Wiimote if mapping differently).
  4. For GameCube pads: set “Port 1” → “Standard Controller” → Configure → choose “XInput” (for Xbox controllers) and map axes/buttons (Dolphin supports automatic XInput mapping on many builds).
  5. Save profile and test in a game.

Step 2: Download the Dolphin UWP Package

  • On your PC, search for "Dolphin UWP (Universal Windows Platform) release."
  • Download the latest .appxbundle file (specifically the "Dolphin_TriCore" build for stability on Xbox).
  • Download the "Dolphin Xbox" dependencies (VC++ redistributables for UWP).

Step 3: Install via Device Portal

  • On your Xbox in Dev Mode, open the Dev Home app to find your console’s IP address.
  • On your PC browser, enter that IP address with port 8080.
  • Log in with the password shown on your Xbox screen.
  • Go to "Install Apps" and upload the .appxbundle you downloaded.
