Technical Analysis

Why the ".exe" suffix?

The name was coined in late 2022 by a Thai breeder known online as @BugScript. During a livestream, the breeder’s proprietary camera software crashed, rendering their Cubaris culture as a blocky, pixelated mess on screen. The chat joked, "Your Cubaris just turned into an .exe file." The name stuck. The breeder subsequently isolated the specific individuals whose natural patterns closest resembled that glitched screenshot. Cubaris

Part 2: The Visual Signature – "Glitch-Punk Isopods"

If you are trying to identify a genuine cubaris.exe , look for four distinct traits: Part 2: The Visual Signature – "Glitch-Punk Isopods"

  1. Pixelated Margins: Unlike the smooth gradient of a Cubaris "Panda King," the .exe morph has hard, rectangular borders between its pigment cells (chromatophores).
  2. ASCII Art Undertones: The ventral side (belly) often displays tiny, random white dots that look like a falling code matrix.
  3. Color Variants:
    • Classic .exe: Black base with neon white "dead pixels."
    • Error Red: Burgundy base with crimson blocks.
    • Blue Screen: A rare mutation where the white is replaced by pale cyan (prices exceed $500 per pair).
  4. Eye Structure: They retain the classic Cubaris compound eye, but the ommatidia (individual lenses) often appear more separated, amplifying the "digital" look.

Beware of fakes. Unscrupulous sellers have tried to pass Armadillidium vulgare "Punta Cana" or Cubaris "Platinion" as .exe. A true cubaris.exe has a distinct body slope —the anterior is flat like a keyboard key, while the posterior arches sharply.
