⚠️ Critical Warning: A failed firmware update can brick your radio. Ensure your computer does not go to sleep, the USB cable does not disconnect, and the battery is fully charged before starting.

Step 1: Install Drivers & Identify COM Port

1. Plug in your programming cable (radio end not connected yet).
2. Install drivers if not auto-detected. Download the correct driver for your cable chip.
3. Find COM Port:
   • Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
   • Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
   • Look for "USB Serial Port (COMx)" – note the number (e.g., COM3).

Stock Firmware vs. OpenGD77

For the DM-1702, there are two main firmware paths:

• Stock Baofeng Firmware: What comes pre-installed. It is basic, functional, but often clunky. Menu navigation is slow, and DMR features are limited.
• OpenGD77 Firmware: A custom, open-source firmware originally built for the Radioddity GD-77, now ported to the DM-1702. This is the gold standard. It offers a faster menu, better audio codecs, Satellite mode, a spectrum analyzer, and vastly superior DMR user experience. Most experienced users update their DM-1702 specifically to install OpenGD77.

Step 3: Flashing the Firmware

1. Ensure your DM-1702 is still in DFU mode (Black screen, cable connected).
2. Open the DMR Flash Tool (often included with OpenGD77, or use the OpenGD77_Flasher.exe).
3. Select the firmware file you downloaded (OpenGD77_DM1702.sgl).
4. Select "DM-1702" from the radio model dropdown.
5. Click "Write Firmware".
6. Do not touch the radio or the cable. The progress bar will tick from 0% to 100%. This takes about 1–2 minutes.
7. Once complete, the tool will say "Success". Turn the radio OFF and disconnect the USB cable.
