What is Ayat Sakina? (The Concept of Divine Tranquility)

The word Sakina (سكينة) derives from the Arabic root Sakana, meaning "to be calm," "still," or "to abide." In Islamic theology, Sakina is not merely a feeling; it is a divine gift—a spiritual state of reassurance, peace, and steadfastness that Allah sends down into the hearts of believers.

The term appears explicitly in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:248), where it is described as a tangible sign of divine presence:

"And their prophet said to them, 'Indeed, the sign of his kingship is that the chest (Tabut) will come to you in which is Sakina from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left, carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.'" (Quran 2:248) During Travel: Recite Surah At-Tawbah 9:40 (The Cave

Over time, scholars have identified specific verses throughout the Quran that invoke this Sakina. Collectively, these are known as Ayat Sakina. Reciting them is believed to bring immediate calmness, repel Shaytan (Satan), remove anxiety, and provide protection from harm.

4. Surah Al-Fath (48:4)

"Huwal-ladhī anzalas-sakīnata fī qulūbil-mu'minīna liyazdādū īmānam ma'a īmānihim..." (It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith...) Context: During the Hudaybiyyah treaty when the companions were confused and distressed.
