Curious what's under the hood?
On the 31st May 2006, Microsoft released Windows Live OneCare, an all-in-one piece of software to tune-up your PC bundled with an Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware and Firewall.
Since 2009, OneCare was shutdown, along with the servers required to install and properly use the product. This brought it to a halt until now.
YouTuber MJD picked up a copy of the software from a thrift store and attempted to install it which you can view here. This however, didn't go as planned due to the servers being down, preventing the installation.
After requesting a copy of the disc, I was able to recreate an installer, bringing back OneCare from the dead.
OneCare Rewritten allows users who still have their discs to install OneCare for nostalgic purposes to re-experience a blast from the past.

AutoCAD 2012 remains a popular choice for Windows 7 (64-bit) environments due to its balance of advanced features and relatively low system footprint. While "portable" versions are unofficial and not supported by Autodesk, they are often sought for their ability to run without a full system installation, often from a USB drive Key Features of AutoCAD 2012 Enhanced Associative Arrays
: One of the most significant updates in 2012, allowing you to create objects in rectangular or polar patterns that remain linked, so editing the source object updates the entire array. Auto-Complete Command Entry
: Introduced to speed up drafting by suggesting commands and aliases as you type in the command line. Performance on Windows 7
: This version was optimized specifically for Windows 7, offering faster startup times and nearly instantaneous ribbon tab switching compared to previous versions. 3D Modeling Improvements
: Added new tools for surface modeling, including "NURBS" surfaces and enhanced "Grip" editing for faster 3D object manipulation. System Requirements (64-bit)
To run AutoCAD 2012 smoothly on Windows 7 (64-bit), your hardware should meet these standards:
: AMD Athlon 64 or Intel Pentium 4 with EM64T support (SSE2 technology required). 4 GB to 8 GB is recommended for complex 3D projects.
: Minimum 1024 x 768 resolution with True Color; 1280 x 1024 or higher is recommended for 3D modeling. Disk Space : Approximately
for the installation, though portable versions typically require less active disk footprint. Important Considerations for Portable Use
: Portable versions may lack certain shared libraries (like .NET Framework or C++ Redistributables) typically found on a host PC, which can lead to crashes if those dependencies aren't already installed. Legacy Support
: Since Autodesk no longer officially supports AutoCAD 2012, finding official downloads is difficult. Many users rely on Autodesk Community Forums for troubleshooting older licenses. VBA Compatibility autocad 2012 portable windows 7 64 bits
: If you use custom VBA macros, note that 64-bit AutoCAD 2012 requires a specific VBA enabler, as 32-bit VBA code is not natively compatible with 64-bit environments. AutoCAD 2012 Portable for Windows 7 (64-bit): Comprehensive Guide
The demand for AutoCAD 2012 portable on Windows 7 64-bit remains high due to the software's stability and its relatively low system requirements compared to modern versions. This combination is often sought by professionals using legacy hardware or those needing a quick, "zero-install" solution for 2D and 3D drafting. What is AutoCAD 2012 Portable?
A "portable" version of AutoCAD 2012 is a modified build of the software that allows it to run without a traditional installation. Key characteristics include:
No Installation Required: It can be launched directly from a USB drive or a local folder.
Self-Contained: Settings and temporary files are often stored within the application's own directory rather than the Windows Registry.
Reduced Footprint: Many portable versions are stripped of non-essential secondary tools to save space. System Requirements for Windows 7 (64-bit)
To run AutoCAD 2012 effectively on a 64-bit architecture, your system should meet the following Official Autodesk Requirements: Minimum Specification Operating System
Windows 7 Enterprise, Ultimate, Professional, or Home Premium Processor
AMD Athlon 64 or Intel Pentium 4 with Intel EM64T support & SSE2 technology Memory (RAM) 2 GB (4 GB or more highly recommended for 3D modeling) Hard Disk Space
2 GB free space for basic operation (2 GB additional for 3D) Display 1024 x 768 resolution with True Color Graphics Card
128 MB or greater with Pixel Shader 3.0 and Direct3D capability Key Features of the 2012 Version No Installation Required : Simply download and run
AutoCAD 2012 introduced several tools that are still relevant for modern drafting:
Associative Arrays: Objects in an array remain linked, allowing for easy updates to the entire pattern.
Multifunctional Grips: Simplified editing for splines, polylines, and 3D faces.
Improved 3D Importing: Direct import of models from SolidWorks, CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER, and Rhino.
Auto-Complete Command Entry: Enhances speed by suggesting commands as you type in the command line. Critical Considerations and Risks
While the idea of a portable CAD program is appealing, users should be aware of several significant drawbacks associated with unofficial portable builds:
Security Hazards: Portable versions from unofficial sources are common vectors for malware and spyware. Since they bypass traditional installation, they may also bypass security prompts.
Stability Issues: AutoCAD is a complex software that relies heavily on shared system libraries like the .NET Framework and Visual C++ Runtimes. If these are missing on the host computer, the portable version will likely crash.
Licensing and Compliance: Autodesk does not officially produce a portable version of AutoCAD 2012. Using one may violate end-user license agreements (EULA), which can lead to legal or financial risks for businesses.
Hardware Acceleration: Portable builds often fail to correctly identify high-end GPUs, leading to poor performance in 3D views. Recommendations for Users If you require a lightweight or flexible CAD solution:
Official Subscription: Access the latest versions via the Autodesk Store for full cloud and mobile support.
Educational Access: Students and educators can often obtain free educational licenses for official versions.
Standard Installation: For maximum stability on Windows 7, use the original AutoCAD 2012 Installer and apply all necessary Service Packs.
Cause: Missing acad2012.cfg or wrong working directory.
Fix: Create a .bat file in the same folder with:
@echo off
set ACADDRIVE=%~dp0
cd /d %ACADDRIVE%
start acad.exe /product ACAD /language "en-US"
Cause: DEP (Data Execution Prevention) or missing VC++ 2010 runtimes.
Fix: Install vcredist_x64.exe from Microsoft (doesn’t break portability). Also disable DEP for acad.exe.
In the realm of computer-aided design (CAD), the phrase "AutoCAD 2012 Portable Windows 7 64 bits" represents a specific digital crossroads. It is a search term born out of necessity for users working on legacy systems, but it is also a term laden with technical misconceptions and security pitfalls.
To understand this topic, one must look at why this specific version is sought after, the technical anomaly of "portable" CAD software, and the risks involved in downloading it today.
Instead of downloading shady repacks, create your own semi-portable version:
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2012) to your USB drive.C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2012.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R18.2 and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R18.2.acad.exe from the USB drive.Result: Slow but functional. Not truly portable, but cleaner than most repacks.
Originally, it was. However, further looking into Microsofts terms prohibts any re-use or reproduction of their material, punishable by law. I don't wish to be sued by Microsoft and so replaced the materials in the installer with some photo's of my servers, keeps it 'techy'.
While the OneCare Rewritten installer itself is free, the actual product, Microsoft Windows Live OneCare is a paid product. The OneCare Rewritten project is nothing more than a rebuilt installer for OneCare to continuue installation regardless of Microsoft Servers being available.
This means if you do not own functional installation medium, this software will NOT install OneCare.
